"HOW THE FUCK ARE THEY GETTING UP THERE". Then along came quakeworld and you could play it exactly like Doom, except you would die. Suddenly we could play "well" against other people, instead of being lumbering targets. The whole CIRCLE-STRAFE, and WASD control thing was a -revelation- (to a great many of us). I've always sucked, it's a truism I can't escape.īut sometimes I'm just doing something *wrong*, and that 'wrongness' isn't apparent to me until it's explained (clearly and in a non aggressive fashion) why doing "whatever" with the physical controls is a bad idea.Ī couple of historical anecdotes for reference:īack in the Doom 2 days, people played moving with Arrow Keys, and used the mouse for side-to-side target movement and shooting. You may not remember, but you sucked at FPSes.
Personally I'm still hoping for a late PC port of Red Dead Redemption. He had the hardest time completing the memory style hacking minigames in the tutorial part of the game in time. He was playing Mass Effect 2 on PC with mouse+keyboard after a life of dedicated console gaming, and was moving the mouse in a sort of slow/gradual/measured way as if it was some kind of hyper sensitive experimental analog control in a hyper-modern fighter jet. I know plenty of people have gone from mouse+keyboard to controller without minding too much, perhaps it's just too hardwired into some of us.Īll that said, I found it hilarious to watch a buddy struggle with transitioning the opposite way. I've completely given up on finding joy in shooter mechanics on a gamepad, and I say this as a 360 owner. I literally won a small local tournament in the game one or two days after (the game had just come out, so people weren't great at it).Ĭonsole FPS controls are something I've tried here and there since Goldeneye on the N64 (yes, I've tried Halo games and the like) and it's never felt like I just needed to learn an alternative way of doing things - it's always just felt like I was playing with a straight-jacket on. I clearly remember being surprised that it was that easy when it seemed so complicated and daunting at a distance. We were used to using the mouse like that, just not in combination with the keyboard.
I'm with vishnu in that I think it took me 1-2 hours to make the full switch. I was of the "from my cold dead hands" school of keyboard-only FPS gaming until Quake 2 made it absolutely necessary to use a keyboard and mouse.
The single-player game is completely on the rails as far as I can tell plus there is no 'server browser' just a 'join game' button which irks me a bit too, since I prefer fuller games (whine, moan, gripe, etc).Ĭan someone let me in on the 'how to play with a controller and do ok' secret(s)? I still play a bit of pubbie-server BC2 on the PC, and a lot of Black Ops (friends only) on PC, but my console-FPS skills are just horrid. I just "look at sky/look at ground/fire into wall nowhere near opponent/die" So, HOW do you -accurately- move your cursor with a controller? I see other players playing and they seem to be perfectly fine (and accurate).
It's insanely slow and difficult compared to using a mouse.īC2 on the PS3 doesn't cater for a mouse, only for the six-axis controller (I plugged a mouse in to check, the PS3 recognises it, lets me move through menus with it, but in game, there is no reaction to using the mouse. My movement is similarly left/right or forward/back, never diagonally. My aiming reticule is like an ETCH A SKETCH on the screen, always moving in up/down OR left/right, never diagonally. I just cannot cope with the dual-joystick move/look-shoot paradigm. (I have 300+ hours racked up in BC2 for the PC).
